Peter Sumner a former Army man, LGBTI rights advocate and long time pillar of the Wellington gay community died this week aged 84.

Sumner was a former Lieutenant Colonel who played an important role in the fight for Homosexual Law Reforms in 1984/85.

Bill Logan told gaynz.com that recalled discussions Sumner had with reform opponent MP Geoff Braybrooke. “They talked about homosexuality and the Army and so on,” but “Braybrooke was immovable, of course.”

Peter Sumner also was involved with the Gay Switchboard in the 80s and beyond.

A memorial service will be held at Wellington Cathedral on Monday 13 January at 2PM.
