    Millionaire vows to fight charges - 26-Mar-2005
    A Wellington property millionaire faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of raping a teenage male on his yacht, making a pornographic video and possessing cannabis, Vanuatu police say.
    James Bernard Quin, 56, is vowing to fight the charges, which relate to alleged activity that took place on his yacht, the Marie Chantal, earlier this month.

    To what extent is it in the public interest for news outlets to run details of the private lives of victims of violent crime? It’s not a new question, but it seems to be one of growing importance in this country, as newspapers and television news networks increasingly see fit to run with scurrilous insinuation and innuendo about murder victims. Most recently, the New Zealand Herald front-page led with the distasteful slogan “Slain stamp collector led secret gay life” (NZH, 15/7/2004). The article purported to describe the brutal killing of Auckland man Robert Hunt, but in fact seemed more interested in drawing out tenuous links between the dead man’s apparent sexual orientation and the possibility of a ring of paedophile philatelists. Since police have been quick to point out that Hunt was a “law-abiding citizen who led a fairly quiet life,” this murmur of front-page gossip has petered out in a splutter of disappointment.

    NZ Man Robs Bank with Blood-Filled Syringe - 12-Nov-1995
    A thief carrying a blood-filled syringe stole about NZ$2,000 from a New Zealand bank. The man absconded with the money by threatening three bank employees with the syringe, which they feared was filled with HIV-infected blood, Television New Zealand reported. A police squad has searched the residence of one suspect, but have not found the man.
