    Just because you’re gay and over 40 doesn’t mean you’re sexually unattractive or “over the hill” says a new innovative health campaign by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation’s Gay Men’s Health programme.
    Launched at the Outtakes film festival in Auckland last week (Thursday May 26), the Foundation is breaking new health promotion ground with “Cocksure”, Aotearoa New Zealand’s first ever HIV prevention and men’s health promotion campaign designed for gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) 40 years and over.

    NZ AIDS Foundation Board Elects First Maori Chairperson - 30-May-2005
    Dr Clive Aspin has been elected Chairperson of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation Board. The announcement was made by the Foundation at each of its regional offices today.
    Dr Aspin is of Ngati Maru descent and is the first Maori to be elected as chairperson of the Board.

    'Safe sex fatigue' worries Aids workers - 16-May-2005
    "Safe sex fatigue" has caused HIV cases to soar in recent years, according to a Christchurch sexual health promoter.
    "People are getting sick of the message. (They) are getting blase," Diane Shannon, of Community and Public Health said.

    International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2005
    New Zealanders who think HIV/AIDS is not their issue should be prepared to accept devastation of families, a massive increase in HIV among youth, more children born with the virus and severe impacts on economic prosperity, says the New Zealand AIDS Foundation on the eve of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial.
    The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 15 is to honour the memory of those who have died of AIDS, show support for those living with or affected by the virus and to mobilise community involvement in the fight against the spreads of HIV.

    Turning Remembrance into Action
    Papua New Guinea HIV/AIDS Crisis - 9-May-2005
    A recent report that Papua New Guinea stands to lose nearly half of its labour force to HIV/AIDS is a warning the whole of the Pacific region should heed, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation says.
    An Australian AIDS study in Papua New Guinea predicts that the country will lose about 40 per cent of its labour force to HIV/AIDS over the next 15 years, which has prompted calls for more funding to tackle the problem.

    Old HIV negative tests give men false security - 9-May-2005
    In spite of having unprotected sex with a casual partner at least once since their last HIV-negative test, one third of men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in an Auckland survey still believe they are “definitely” HIV negative, a situation which is worrying HIV researchers.
    The New Zealand AIDS Foundation says the latest findings from the 2004 Gay Auckland Periodic Sex Survey (GAPSS) show that some Auckland MSM are using previous HIV negative test results well beyond their actual validity.

    Matt Whyte Grant will help researcher understand why people take risks that lead to HIV infection - 1-May-2005
    A Study to try to understand the social and cultural factors that influence men’s decisions to put themselves at risk of HIV has been awarded the first Matt Whyte Postgraduate Research Grant by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
    The $6000 per annum grant has gone to a study proposal presented by Michael Stevens who has just commenced a PhD at the University of Auckland. Matt Whyte was a long-term worker for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation who worked tirelessly in the field of HIV prevention and support of people living with HIV. He died of an AIDS-related illness last year.

    Maori are being encouraged to join discussion on the impact of HIV/AIDS on indigenous peoples at the 16th International Aids Conference in Toronto.
    Two-Spirited (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) People of the First Nations and the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy have begun the planning for the Indigenous Peoples’ Satellite at the XVIth International AIDS Conference in Toronto, Canada in August, 2006.

    NZ firm in deal to cut spread of Aids - 19-Mar-2005
    A Lower Hutt company has landed a multimillion-dollar deal to make an anti-HIV gel that could save millions of lives.
    Industrial Research Ltd has teamed up with Australian biotech company Starpharma to make the building blocks for its product VivaGel – a revolutionary microbe-killing gel designed to prevent the sexual spread of HIV.

    New diagnoses of HIV in 2004 remain at last year’s high levels - 18-Feb-2005
    The record numbers of new HIV cases in New Zealand in 2003 have continued for 2004, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation said today.
    Commenting on the new HIV/AIDS figures for all of 2004 released by the AIDS Epidemiology Group today, the Foundation noted that in 2004 there were 157 new diagnoses of HIV through antibody testing, compared to 154 in 2003. In the two years prior to 2003, 107 and 95 people respectively had been diagnosed with HIV.

    Rise in syphilis cases prompts criticism - 31-Jan-2005
    The Government's safe sex campaign is falling on deaf ears as syphilis cases increase, National Party Health spokeswoman Judith Collins says.
    Auckland's sexual health clinic has seen cases increase dramatically in recent years -- from fewer than five in 2001 to 20 last year. Nationally the Health Ministry said there were 18 syphilis cases in 2001 compared with 50 cases for the first nine months of last year.

    New Zealand to Host Pan Pacific HIV/AIDS conference - 20-Jan-2005
    Submissions have opened for what is expected to be the biggest international HIV/AIDS conference to be hosted in New Zealand.
    The “Te Whanau O Te Moana-Nui-A-Kiwa, Me Te Mate Parekore – Family of the Pacific and HIV/AIDS” Pan Pacific Regional HIV/AIDS Conference 2005 will take place in Auckland from 25 to 28 October. It will be the first conference of its size and type to be held in New Zealand for many years.

    Calls to remove HIV-positive man from community - 30-Dec-2004
    Residents of the Selwyn district of Canterbury are battling to remove a former male prostitute from their community.
    Christopher Truscott, who is terminally ill with HIV-related conditions, was moved into a home in the district last week amid concerns from some residents that he posed a threat to the community.
