HIV Wives - 9-Sep-2005
The unique issues faced by HIV-negative men living in a relationship with a man who is HIV-positive has prompted the establishment of a social support group in Auckland.
With the fun and attention getting name of “HIV Wives” and describing themselves as “serodivergent” the group was started by HIV-negative gay men living in a relationship with positive men. Members intend to meet regularly to support each other and discuss the issues that are unique to their situation.
“Supporting their partner’s health regime, dealing with changes in their partner’s wellness, issues of intimacy and sexual safety, and learning how to put HIV in its place so it doesn’t become the dominant issue in the relationship, are among some of the issues that the HIV-negative person in ‘serodivergent’ relationships can face,” says Wayne Otter, Regional Coordinator at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation’s Burnett Centre in Auckland.
“The group was started by men dealing with these issues and wanting a safe place for negative partners to meet and share with others in the same situation. HIV Wives intends to meet monthly and has asked the Burnett Centre to be the contact point for anyone else wanting to join.”
