Votes are now being taken at www.safesexposterboy.co.nz until Tuesday December 4 to determine the winners in each category, following a series of semifinal events held at gay venues around the country throughout November.
The categories are: Party Boy, Bear/Cub/Leather, Boy Next Door/Regular Guy, Sportsman, Businessman/Professional and Alternative. More than 85 entries were received for the contest overall.
Contestants at semifinal events in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch had to win over both a panel of community judges and the crowd – who sent in text votes running into the hundreds – with their answers to the question: why do you use condoms?
“We’re thrilled to see so many men engaging with both the contest and our condom culture,” says Douglas Jenkin, National Campaigns Co-ordinator for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. “The quality and number of entries, and the attendances for the semifinals have shown that gay and bisexual men are willing to affirm their commitment to safe sex and preventing HIV in our communities.”
The six winners of Safe Sex Poster Boy will be announced next week, on December 5.
