The adversity that Beyer has faced is what has prompted a film about her life.
The two Australian-based producers behind the film were not the only ones interested in making a big screen version of Beyer's life, but it was quality than cash that was behind her decision.
But for those picturing a low budget kiwi flick - think again. The budget for the film is in the millions.
Since retiring from Parliament in February last year, the former Carterton mayor has been looking for a new project and says she will be working with the filmmakers by providing input into the script.
"I'm not going to be one of those people that wants to be there every inch of the way and having some control over casting of course," Beyer told 3 News.
Which raises the question of who is the best person to play a woman who has been been a man, a prostitute and a politician?
"It would be so easy to say someone glamorous like Halle Berry, but totally ridiculous to think it would be someone like that!"
While Beyer is no stranger to acting, having appeared in Shark in the Park and on Shortland Street, she has declined to make a cameo appearance in the film.
"I don't actually feel compelled to be in it, it's enough to be the subject."
Filming is expected to start later this year.
