Calling All Gay Men To Kiss And Tell

Songs for a guyThe creators of the all new Gay cabaret show Songs for Guy are calling on men to submit personal short stories, thoughts, beliefs and anecdotes that reflect their experience of living and growing up as a gay NZ male.

In the same vein as the classic Broadway musical A Chorus Line combined personal stories with musical numbers, Songs for Guy will offer up an evening of eclectic stories and love songs about gay men living in our small country on the edge of the world.

Creators want all to hear ALL kinds of stories – short and long, old and new, serious and comical. They want to hear about battles fought and what a gay man’s life was like 20, 30, 50 years ago, about the journey and how far there is to go. They want to hear personal stories, tips and quips – what it means to love, how do you get that guy and most importantly what to wear?! Think funny, and poignant and sexy!

A selection of the material received will be used live on stage when Songs for Guy opens for a limited season at the Limelight Bar, Aotea Centre, THE EDGE on the 7th of September.

Songs for Guy will bring together some extraordinary stories about ordinary gay men’s lives in New Zealand and present them alongside some of the world’s favourite love songs. In popular media there is a very small amount of songs sung by men about men. Often gay men adapt these songs in their heads to share in the experiences being sung about. Songs for Guy will do this adaptation for the audience and adjust the songs so that they are being sung by men about men. For many men it will be the first time they will have heard their favourite songs sung from their point of view.

So, in addition to the stories the creators are also interested in receiving any suggestions for songs that capture the mood of man on man love. From Gershwin and Sondheim to Springsteen and Wainwright… music will be selected to compliment the stories that will be performed. Like the musical genre the songs take over where words aren’t quite enough. Like the stories, they’ll be sweet, funny, bitchy and poignant.

To submit stories, thoughts and ideas email songsforguy@gmail.com or 021 135 2777
Submissions open Friday June 4 and close Monday July 5.
NB: Stories can be confidential.
